When Pitta Becomes a Kapha Imbalance

One of the most challenging parts of identifying an energetic imbalance in Ayurveda is managing when multiple doshas are out of balance ๐Ÿ˜ต‍๐Ÿ’ซ. I remember back when I would run my Ayurvedic workshops and so often I would hear, well, I am out of balance in all the doshas, where do I begin? If you try to start healing all the doshas at once, good luck. You will find yourself doggy paddling in a sea of recommendations just to remain afloat ๐Ÿ™€๐ŸŒŠ.

 

But, there is a way you can simplify and understand the nuance of your particular imbalance. While we may feel pulled to start healing the dosha that seems to be on the surface, Ayurveda is a science that always recommends to heal the root cause โค๏ธ first. If you can heal this, all the other energies can fall into better alignment, just as you would treat the root of a plant ๐ŸŒฑrather than the rotten leaves. So let's take a look at some typical scenarios I see when multiple doshas are out of balance.

 

Pitta--> Kapha

We live in a culture that celebrates a Pitta who is out of balance. Burnout ๐Ÿฅต and exhaustion are viewed as a badge of honor and somehow send the signal that you are well disciplined and a heroโญ๏ธ. At the same time, fiery energy types have developed their sense of worth around their productivity and ability to transform ideas into physical reality. They then become hyper-fixated on their goals as the single most important focus ๐Ÿคฉ on their lives and forget everything else ๐Ÿฅบ(i.e. self care, relationships, rest, joy, feminity). A pitta who is burnt out may not even notice the signs, because of this hyper-fixation. Their body begs for rest or pleads with inflammatory responses, but there desire to complete their goals overrides their body's intuition ๐Ÿ˜ณ. It is a 'pushing' and 'forcing' ๐Ÿ˜ค type of feeling that is unnatural to how the body truly wants to move.

 

When a Pitta has been in a state of burn out for so long, I often see a Kapha imbalance start to arise. At this point, the Pitta has neglected a lot of forms of nourishment that they need to feel fulfilled and the more joyful parts of their business and being a human. Their daily meditation practice ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿผ‍โ™€๏ธmay have fallen to the wayside as they rather have an extra 20 minutes to sleep in๐Ÿ˜ด. Their monthly vision boarding session and day of rest is the first to go, just so they can keep up with the more 'important' parts of their business. Over time, these small practices add up to a feeling of lack and an empty well. They need something to fill that space (earth and water), also known as, Kapha dosha ๐Ÿ’š.

 

The easiest way to fill that void is with food ๐Ÿ›. This is because this form of nourishment is crucial to our survival. If that becomes one of the main (sometimes only) ways you are currently taking care of yourself, you will notice yourself binge and overeat to feel fulfilled. Another Kapha imbalance that can arise is having frequent colds or mucus-y type illnesses ๐Ÿ˜ช, specifically around the time of the month your body naturally wants to be resting (i.e. new moon or when you receive your period). When it comes to your business, you may feel totally stuck creatively, avoid creating new content and do everything on your to-do list other than create an IG strategy. Sleeping in, skipping workouts, procrastinating projects, feeling sluggish ๐Ÿฅฑ and depressed can all be Kapha symptoms coming along for the ride.

 

This type of Kapha imbalance doesn't come from laziness or even fear to move forward. This Kapha imbalance comes from a survival mechanism to heal your Pitta imbalance. The body is exhausted and needs sustenance and joy to feel restored ๐Ÿซ . It is intuitively bringing in earth and water elements into the body to regulate; however, it is causing the body to be even more out of balance ๐Ÿซฃ.

 

Noticing this nuanced difference is pivotal, because you will not be able to treat the issue by treating the symptom- Kapha. While it certainly may feel like you want to lose weight or just sit down to create content, your body is currently burnt out. Treating your body with practices and routines that mirror the fire and air element ๐Ÿ”ฅ, will only exacerbate your pitta imbalance. What your body is really craving is grounding ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿผ‍โ™€๏ธ and nourishment ๐Ÿฅฌ, the water and earth elements. Until you bring those elements back into your life, your body will find anyway (albeit unhealthy) to do so.

 

Now in a case where multiple doshas are out of balance, you have to be methodical about your treatment plan. This is tricky for a pitta/kapha imbalance, because normally you would bring in earth and water to heal Pitta. However, with kapha out of balance, bringing in more of these elements can pull Kapha out of balance ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿผ‍โ™€๏ธ- aka feeling more stuck.

 

In every imbalance, the issue is that you have disconnected from your intuition๐Ÿงš๐Ÿป. You have picked up other's energies as your own and neglected what your mind, body and spirit have intuitively been whispering to you. Once you are reconnected with your intuition, you can then implement an intuitive healing plan to keep you on track. In this particular case, I recommend focusing on clearing space in your schedule and grounding your body in a healthy way (i.e. remember although your body will want to lie flat like a pancake, doing so, can further your kapha imbalance). This can be best done by simply slowing down.

 

Take a moment to pause and really assess and digest what is going on in your body and in your life. What is completely necessary for you to continue in your life right now and what needs to be cleared off your schedule ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ? The clearing will help to ease the stagnation from your Kapha imbalance and simultaneously allow you to treat your Pitta imbalance by removing work loads that are causing you to burn out. 

 

Then, focus on just 1-3 goals for yourself. Let one of them be career focused and the rest on healing your body. This focus will help you to move forward towards your goals (easing Kapha symptoms) while also restoring your body (healing Pitta).
